HD stands for "high dose." Asacol HD (mesalamine) delayed-release tablets contain a high dose of mesalamine—800 mg per tablet indicated at a dose of 4.8 g/day.
How does Asacol HD work?
The Asacol HD patented delivery system gets mesalamine to the colon, where it is needed most. Mesalamine, the active ingredient in Asacol HD, acts throughout the colon to help reduce inflammation of the inner lining of the colon and rectum.
Does Asacol HD cure ulcerative colitis?
There is no cure for UC besides surgical removal of the colon. Asacol HD can help reduce your UC symptoms, including stool frequency and rectal bleeding, so you can spend more of your time the way you want.
Does Asacol HD contain steroids?
No.
How soon does Asacol HD work?
In clinical studies, Asacol HD rapidly decreased the number of trips to the bathroom (i.e., number of bowel movements) in approximately two out of three patients and decreased rectal bleeding for about three out of four patients—by three weeks (individual results may vary).
